In North Wales we are lucky enough to have some of the UK’s best beaches (we may be slightly biased!) on our doorstep. Whether you are planning on embarking on part of the Wales Coastal Path or just hoping for a sunny day out at the beach, we have a seaside suggestion to satisfy everyone. Read on for our pick of the best beach walks near North Wales and some clothing suggestions to keep you comfortable.
Traeth Llanddwyn | Newborough Beach
Providing panoramic views of Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula, Newborough is without doubt one of North Wales’ most scenic beaches. A combination of rolling dunes, historic buildings, forest trails, secluded coves and miles of sand waiting to be explored make it ideal for a family day out. It is also a national nature reserve and one of the most important red squirrel conservation sites in the UK so keep your eyes peeled for local widlife.
Conwy Morfa Beach
Within walking distance of the historic town of Conwy, the picturesque marina and a golf course, Conwy Morfa Beach has no shortage of things to do on a seaside day out. The beach is in a sandy bay which stretches for miles and forms part of the mussel banks of Conwy Bay. The area is rich in wildlife and is great for bird watching as well as paddling, walking and building sandcastles. Conwy Morfa is an ideal beach in North Wales for dog walking.
Hillbre Island
Hillbre Island sits at the mouth of the Dee Estuary and can be reached by foot while the tide is out. The region is one of the best places in the local area for spotting rare and endangered wildlife. Grey seals and migrating birds can be seen from the island at certain times of year. From the mainland across the sand to the islands is 2 miles so takes about an hour each way.
Black Rock Sands
Rockpools, caves and sheltered coves are waiting to be explored at Black Rock Sands. Wide open beach which stretches for about two miles along Wales’ west coast is backed by sand dunes that have been designated a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’. Local wildlife can be spotted in abundance as well as motorboats which have a designated zone making it a popular spot for water sport enthusiasts.
Talacre
The ideal spot for walking the dog and exploring North Wales’ coastline. Miles of golden sand lead to the Point of Ayr lighthouse which was first in use during the 18th Century. The lighthouse has a fascinating history and some say to this day it is still frequented by a ghost of the old lighthouse keeper! Talacre is a haven for local wildlife including the natterjack toad terns, skylarks, meadow pipits and warblers. If you fancy a long meander along the beach, dunes and coastal path, it takes about 1.5 hours each way to walk from Talacre to Prestatyn.
